WebRTC leak: does your browser reveal your IP address?
WebRTC makes video calls in the browser possible. It can also reveal your real IP address and your home network address – even behind a VPN.
To connect two browsers directly, WebRTC asks a so-called STUN server which public address it sees. Any website can trigger this without showing you a prompt. If you use a VPN and the answer is a different address than the one your VPN shows, your real IP is leaking.
Older browsers also reveal your local address, such as 192.168.1.23. Modern browsers hide it behind a random name ending in .local.
The test asks Cloudflare’s STUN server and compares the answer with the address you came from. Nothing is stored.
What people ask
Is WebRTC dangerous?
No, it is a normal part of modern browsers and is used for video meetings. The problem only arises if you rely on a VPN to hide your address and WebRTC goes around it.
Should I turn WebRTC off?
Only if you do not use video meetings in the browser. It is better to choose a VPN or browser that sends WebRTC through the tunnel.
